Description:

East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A fascinating bronze tripod vessel boasting a unique form with a cylindrical body sat upon 3 feet in the form of oxen hooves with a hinged maskette, a tubular spout, and 3 spikes rising from the rim. Elevated horizontal bands with parallel incised striations adorn the exterior walls. The maskette was likely previously attached to a lid that would sit upon the rim spikes, allowing the vessel to function as a teapot. Once the lid was lost, the spout was sealed so the piece could instead serve as a cooker or bowl. A rare and quite remarkable example of utilitarian arts in Han-Dynasty China! Size: 7.6" W x 3.6" H (19.3 cm x 9.1 cm)

Provenance: private Shaker Heights, Ohio, USA collection, acquired prior to 2008
