Description:

China, ca. 206-220 CE. Beautiful example of a Han Period bronze Hu vase. While commonly referred to as a vase, the hu was used as a vessel for holding wine. The hu came in a number of shapes, all with a bulbous body with a narrower opening at the top. The body of the piece has two metal bands encircling the top and bottom. It is unclear whether these bands are decorative or were used to reinforce the piece during casting. On either side of the piece are two lion mask (taotie) handles. The entire piece is covered with beautiful wood and textile pseudomorphs, as well as azurite and malachite encrustations. Measures approximately 7 1/4" tall, 6" wide.Provenance: ex- Connell collection, ex-Allen's AntiquitiesAuthenticity GuaranteedThe starting price is the price at which the piece can sell.

  • Condition: Intact with azurite and malachite deposits.
