Description:

East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A hollow socketed bronze axe head with a lovely bulbous socket end; there is a deliberate opening in one side of the axe for hafting. Two large and flat blade faces along with twin lateral midribs taper gently to a broad and slightly-curved blade end. This was most likely a ceremonial object created for burial or decoration because, by this time period, actual Chinese weapons were largely made from iron. A beautiful layer of russet, pale and dark-green patina envelops the surface. Size: 5.375" L (13.7 cm).

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection; purportedly found in Russia
