China, 18th Century CE. Large dadao (literally "big knife") made of iron and wood. A variety of dao (saber), the dadao was made for close combat and executions. They were based on agricultural knives and featured broad blades, long hilts meant for two-handed use, and a weight-forward balance. This fine example is made of iron and wood, with loop of iron at the end of the hilt, and a smaller ring (presumably for hanging) at the base of the hilt.
