East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A charming group of 4 cloisonne enamel and brass animal statues and decorative vessels in matching pairs- crane statues and mythical pixiu protectors! Cranes held a special place in Chinese culture as symbols of longevity, they carry souls to heaven - their imagery is often used in decorative pieces to bring auspicious tidings and luck to the owner - this pair stand on wood bases. Pixiu are winged dragon lion hybrids with a single horn / antler. Similar to cranes, the mythical pixiu was a symbol of protection and wealth, during the Qing dynasty the bodies evolved to possess a fuller, more plump form to represent their prosperity and appetite for gold. The hollow bodies have an opening on the back for holding trinkets or incense! Size: 3" L x 2.3" W x 7.25" H (7.6 cm x 5.8 cm x 18.4 cm); 8.25" H (21 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: The cranes are stabilized on the wood bases via putty and wax, but are removable. Wax and putty can be cleaned from wood but might leave some light residue. Patina and green oxidation to brass. Small nicks and discoloration of enamel. Heavier patina and surface wear to the interior of pixiu vessels.
