Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty to Republic era, ca. 19th to 20th century CE. A cast bronze statue depicting a warrior standing pensively atop a knoll over swirling water. One hand rests on his impressively long beard, the other holds a polearm - possibly a guandao - though the blade is missing. The warrior wears flowing robes over armor, and a gilt gold disc (99% pure gold leaf) adorns his brow. The verso of the figure is etched with untranslated character script. The statue was cast separately, with tenon pegs on the feet that insert into holes on the base. However, due to metal differences, it is uncertain if the base is original to the figure, which is top-heavy and tilts backward slightly when handled. This may represent Guan Yu, a revered military general later deified and celebrated for his loyalty and martial prowess. The roiling waves below him could symbolize his legendary triumph in a battle where he drowned enemy forces using the Han River. Size: 10" L x 8" W x 20.75" H (25.4 cm x 20.3 cm x 52.7 cm)

    Condition:
  • Lower proper right corner of base has a slightly loose wave tendril reattached with a rivet. Dust encrustations on base. Missing tip of weapon, a hole with a threaded interior at the pole's end suggests a blade was once attached. Figure is top heavy and tilts backwards and can fall off the stand if handled. It is possible the figure is not original to this base.
