Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Chinesco, 1st - 3rd century CE. This ceramic figure is a fine representations of the Nayarit style known as Chinesco, notable for smooth burnished surfaces and painted ornament. A female figure, it was most likely part of a pair representing an ancestral male and female. Such pairs traditionally occur among the burial goods of the shaft tombs in western Mexico. This example has a lovely bichrome finish with red-brown linear markings on a milky white ground. It is also adorned with an applied nose ring and perforations for ear ornaments. A form characteristic of Chinesco figurines with splayed conical legs and angular face. Pottery figures in the Chinesco style are some of the most desirable west Mexican pottery available. 9.25"W (23.50 W cm) Provenance: Ex-Private Hawaii collection.
