Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 1644 to 1912 CE, closer to the early part of this period. A fine example of a blue and white ware vessel with large, flared arms that rise upward from the rim like the horns of a mythical creature. The three jutting legs have dramatic zoomorphic faces on them, contributing to the fantastical look of this piece. The body is squared off at the shoulder and base, as is the neck and rim. Blue motifs of flowers and other flora cover the exterior surface against a blue-white background. This is a tripod censer used in many Chinese homes during this time period. Size: 8.55" W x 10.2" H (21.7 cm x 25.9 cm)

Chinese imperial kilns were controlled by the government, and specifically by the court. During the fall of the Ming Dynasty (ca. 1644 CE) the massive kiln complex at Jingdezhen was destroyed, leading to a hiatus in ceramic production. The Manchu rulers of the Qing Dynasty built new Imperial porcelain factories that were producing by 1683. New technology created improved enamel glazes and allowed ceramics to be fired at a higher temperature than during the Ming, and pottery from this period has a bright, brilliant look.

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) and has been found to be within the age range listed above; if purchased, you will receive a report confirming its age.
