Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu / Chancay, ca. 800 to 1300 CE. A fascinating textile fragment made from dyed camelid wool (alpaca or llama), and possibly cotton warps, using the slit tapestry technique that creates slits outlining the bird's bodies. The broad register of abstract birds is framed by a stepped wave / spiral motif and a fringed edge and may be a fragment from a larger shawl or garment hem that has been beautifully preserved due to burial and funerary practices! Comes framed and ready to display. Size of textile: 17.75" L x 4.75" W (45.1 cm x 12.1 cm); frame: 20.25" L x 7.25" W (51.4 cm x 18.4 cm)
