Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu culture, ca. 1100-1350 CE. Fantastic frog shaped stirrup vessel. The artisan of this piece really brought clay to life in this marvelous rendition of a bull frog with its bulging eyes accentuated by concentrically incised orbs, wide, toothy "smile", and massive throat adorned with painted, almost tattooed, details. Appliqu?s of tadpoles swim to either side of the stirrup handle on areas also ornamented with the tattoo-like geometric patterns. His diminutive limbs are dwarfed by his massive body. A fun piece that also rich with symbolism as frogs signified rainfall and fertility in the ancient Americas. 7.00"L x 8.50"W x 5.50"H (17.78 L x 21.59 W x 13.97 H cm) Provenance: Ex-Private Pennsylvania collection, acquired prior to 1980 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
