Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu / Chancay, ca. 800 to 1300 CE. A fascinating textile fragment made from dyed camelid wool (alpaca or llama), and possibly cotton warps, using the slit tapestry technique to outline the motifs - birds, abstract creatures possibly deities. Mounted on a modern cloth backing on a wooden frame. Size of textile: 15" L x 9.25" W (38.1 cm x 23.5 cm); frame backing: 16.25" L x 10.2" W (41.3 cm x 25.9 cm)

  • Condition: Fragment of a larger piece (upper edge is unfinished, and probably cut from a larger textile). Tear to upper black area, but rest of the weaving is well preserved and overall excellent condition. Some fading and discoloration. Mounted in modern times on a modern cloth over a wood frame.
