Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A delightful redware jar presenting a swollen body with stippled walls capped by an adorable coatimundi. Adorned with beige stripes, the charming animal lays at the top of the vessel with limbs hanging down the sides and head projecting forward to display a rounded snout, a slightly open mouth, bulging annular eyes, and petite ears. A sinuous tail extends from his posterior, as the flared mouth of the jar rises from the center of his back, flanked by a pair of lug handles. Though coatimundi are not indigenous to the central coast of Peru, the raccoon-like animals were easily tamed, and its funny antics made it a popular pet, which indicates that it was likely transported to the region by humans. Size: 5.2" W x 4.8" H (13.2 cm x 12.2 cm)

Provenance: private Hidden Valley Lake, California, USA collection, acquired 2021; ex-Heartland Aution, Garden City, Kansas, USA
