Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1200 to 1450 CE. A fine blackware molded vessel in the form of a fish with twin lug handles to either side of the flared vessel mouth rising from the fish's back. In addition to the fish's facial features and fins, which are finely delineated in bas to high relief with incised details, there is a wonderful register of running wave motifs at the base of the mouth A vessel like this one may have been used ceremonially for holding chicha (maize beer) and for pouring libations onto the earth or storing them in the grave.
