Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chimu culture, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery canteen covered in hues of chocolate and espresso in the form of an abstract fish, perhaps a catfish or a mudfish. The marine creature features a lengthy ovoid body with a trio of fins on either side, a tapered tail, and a trapezoidal head with petite eyes on top and a V-shaped mouth on the underside. A tall, flared spout rises from the back of the creature. Size: 11" L x 5" W x 7" H (27.9 cm x 12.7 cm x 17.8 cm)

  • Condition: Repair with restoration to areas of spout rim, tail, and head. Minor abrasions and fading to pigment in scattered areas, with light encrustations, and softening to some finer details. Nice remains of brown pigment throughout.
