Description:

Pre-Columbian, central coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel depicting a seated male figure wearing an open-brimmed hat representative of a phallus. The man wears a shawl covered in dozens of raised hemispheres indicative of maize kernels and stares forward with huge almond-shaped eyes. The bulbous vessel body is surmounted by a stirrup-shaped handle with a cylindrical spout projecting from the middle, and the highly burnished surfaces are decorated with red-orange and creamy yellow pigment. Size: 4.75" W x 7.625" H (12.1 cm x 19.4 cm)

  • Condition: Professional repair to spout, with nearly invisible resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Minor abrasions to base, body, head, and handle, with light fading to pigment, and softening to some finer details. Nice remains of pigment and light earthen deposits throughout.
