Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A beautiful textile fragment composed of tightly woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of wheat, crimson, teal, cobalt, jet, and cream. One half of the rectangular composition features a register of four abstract anthropomorphic figures with frilled collars, three large toes on each foot, and a protruding nodule on either side of the head. The other half depicts repeating triangular, waveform, and rectangular motifs with registers of abstract reptilian and avian creatures interspersed between. Size: 15.625" L x 11" W (39.7 cm x 27.9 cm).

  • Condition: This is a fragment of a larger textile composition; both halves are sewn together in the middle. Loosening and fraying to some interior and peripheral threads, with fading and staining to areas of original pigmentation. Iconography is still visible.
