Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A fine display of a traditional backstrap loom with a partially finished monstrario textile made from camelid wool (llama or alpaca) and cotton threads mounted on a simple wooden frame. The loom consists of two thick bars and 8 groups of heddle threads, and a slender rod that is perhaps a shuttle or heddle stick. The pattern is a yellow ground with a register or diamond and chevron in red and green motifs. A monstrario was meant to be displayed as an example - or "show piece" - of the artist's ability. Mounted on a cloth and wooden frame, this is a fine educational example of a centuries old Peruvian style of weaving. Size (loom): 17" L x 7" W (43.2 cm x 17.8 cm); (cloth frame backing): 21" L x 11" W (53.3 cm x 27.9 cm)
