Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu / Inca culture, ca. 1300 to 1533 CE. A pair of handwoven camelid wool textiles: a thick, double woven sash and a coca leaf bag. The sash was perhaps worn as a chumpi, around the waist, and made with the double weave technique - the reverse face coloration is opposite from the obverse. The bag is sewn from one panel of cloth with a fringe, and a separately woven strap is attached for carrying coca leaves or other lightweight possessions. Size of bag: 8.5" L x 8.25" W (21.6 cm x 21 cm); sash: 54" L x 2" W (137.2 cm x 5.1 cm)

  • Condition: Fraying and small perforations along the upper edge of the bag, Missing some of the fringe, but otherwise good condition. Sash strap is missing the braided cord on one end and has fraying and pulling to fibers along edges and center of weaving. A few small tears, but otherwise tightly woven and good condition with bright colors.
