Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu Inca, ca. 1100 to 1500 CE. A rare ceremonial sling, that features a central section comprised of an extended diamond shape with a border of interlacing step motifs in contrasting chocolate brown and a tawny beige, this central form surrounded by a red linear border. The intricately braided cord is comprised of chocolate brown, beige, and black yarns, one end with creamy beige tassels, the other with rich brown tassels. Size: 95" L (241.3 cm)

Most slings had a long and thin cradle with a long slit for placing the projectile stone or lead sling bullet. This example lacks a slit and was non-functional as true weaponry. Instead it was most likely used in ceremonial rituals. Even today, ceremonial slings are used in parts of the Andes as accessories in dances and in mock battles. The ancient Inca made their slings our of llama wool. They relished contrasting dark and light pigments and mastered painstaking braiding techniques.
