Description:

Pre-Columbian, North/Central Coast Peru, Chimu / Inca culture, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A fine mortar bowl formed from a hollowed-out gourd with a lightly-concave base, rounded walls, and a thin lip that hangs over the shallow basin. The exterior of the bowl is decorated with a pair of pyro-engraved registers of triangular teeth separated by a thin central striation; a small bird is also engraved on the lower exterior. The pestle is formed from a pottery pounding head attached to the bottom of a wooden handle which is tightly-wrapped in dark-brown woven thread. Size (mortar): 4.5" W x 2.4" H (11.4 cm x 6.1 cm); size (pestle): 6.8" L (17.3 cm).

  • Condition: Light repair and stabilization to bottom of mortar. Loss to bottom half of pestle head and some handle threads, and repair to pestle head just below handle with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Light encrustations across most surfaces, and fading to some pyro-engraved motifs. Light earthen deposits throughout.
