Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu-Inca ca. 1200-1450 CE. Beautiful Chimu-Inca blackware double whistling vessel with smooth finish and lively fox head on the front end. Note the finely delineated zoomorphic details of the figural piece - its flattened skull, upright triangular ears, and pointed, slightly upturned snout that unmistakably represent a fox. The fox was one of the most highly revered of all animals to the ancients of Peru. Even so, they were rarely depicted in pottery making this a tremendously rare and important example. The artist even depicted the fox's tongue perhaps to indicate that the little critter is lapping up the chicha beer within. When poured this vessel was designed to whistle in order to prevent anyone from swiping the precious liquid within. 9.50"L x 5.88"W x 5.25"H (24.13 L x 14.92 W x 13.34 H cm) Provenance: Ex-Sobredo collection, acquired in 1964.
