Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu or Inca, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A remarkable blackware stirrup vessel in the form of a shaman seated atop a seashell. The stylized figure displays an egg-shaped body with attenuated limbs as he bends his legs before him and holds a flute in his right hand. A curved horn surmounts his sizeable head, which features huge eyes beneath raised brows, a pointed nose, an elongated mouth, and giant, rectangular ears. The thick stirrup spout arches outward from his back, doubling as a handle, as the vessel tapers to a narrow spout at the other end. Size: 8.2" L x 4.8" W x 8.7" H (20.8 cm x 12.2 cm x 22.1 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, before 2010; ex-private T. Misenhimer collection, Beverly Hills, California, USA, collected from 1970-2008
