Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast, Huari / Wari culture, ca. 500 to 700 CE; Central Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A collection of 3 distinctive woven textiles from ancient Peru made from camelid wool of alpaca or llama, and cotton. The longest piece is a strap or belt made from 2 panels sewn together along the periphery, in a repeating pattern of tan and brown of triangular motifs. A second strap- perhaps a tumpline with wood sticks through the terminal ends- is tightly woven in another mesmerizing geometric triangular and interlocking pattern of red, brown, black, and tan-yellow. The largest is a Chimu made panel, sewn together from 2 separate panels vertically through the center. The red outer bands are thick and tightly woven with repeating pelican motifs, and the solid inner panels and tassel fibers are a loose nearly gauze-like weave of ochre yellow. Size (bird pattern textile): 14" L x 12" W (35.6 cm x 30.5 cm)
