Pre-Columbian, probably Chan Chan, North Coast Peru, ca. 900 - 1400 CE. Wide band of geometric designs, alternating bands of seabirds and fish, having feather and fiber decoration at the top. A masterpiece of pyro-engraving this is an extraordinarily rare piece. It is made from three fragile materials, and is still in amazingly pristine condition after 1000 years. The feather and fiber attachments at the top are original. A piece of this quality must have come from the Chimu capital Chan Chan, and been used by the Royal court. 13"T.
