Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1532 CE. A lovely pottery double-chambered vessel featuring a tall spout and a slender bridge-form handle that connects to the back of an anthropomorphic head. Enveloped in creamy beige pigment, the delightful jar is adorned with relief decoration of stippled and zigzag motifs as well as black-painted bands of straight, undulating, and dotted striations. The fascinating fellow features 2 slender arms that rest on the shoulders of one chamber and an angular visage of huge eyes, prominent, tab-shaped ears, a flared nose, and a slight smile, all crowned by a biconical headdress. Provenance: ex-private Jim Carroll collection, Maryland, USA, excavated or purchased in Peru in the 1960s, thence by descent to present owners

  • Condition: Professionally repaired and restored with repainting over break lines and chipping with minor losses to rim of spout. Perforation to bottom of one chamber, as well as chipping, nicks, and abrasions in areas. Otherwise, good remining pigments.
