Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. This is a blackware spouted vessel, instantly recognizable as an artifact of its time and place, carved in the form of a cheerful deer, with large, appealing eyes, and a pert nose and ears. The tail curls upward from the back of the vessel, fully three-dimensional, while legs and male genitalia are in low relief on the body of the vessel. The spout flares upward from the back and has no rim. A vessel like this one may have been used ceremonially for holding chicha (maize beer) and for pouring libations onto the earth or storing them in the grave. Size: 10" L x 5" W x 8.5" H (25.4 cm x 12.7 cm x 21.6 cm)
