Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu or Inca, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A pottery vessel in the form of a right arm bent at the elbow with hand clenched in a fist and the top of the bicep opening to an annular rim, all enveloped in black slip with a lustrous burnish. Note the artist's careful attention to detail such as the delineated nailbeds and recessed palm. Hand-shaped vessels like this were suggestive of the severed hands of captured prisoners. Prisoners were systematically dismembered starting with their hands, the skin flayed, and their blood imbibed upon by their captors from keros like this. Size: 9.3" L x 3.4" W x 3.8" H (23.6 cm x 8.6 cm x 9.7 cm)

Provenance: private Rochester, Michigan, USA collection; ex-Stein collection, before 2000
