Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. An intriguing blackware effigy vessel depicting a seated lord or shaman figure with a proud countenance, finely delineated facial features, wearing a tall flared headdress, and sitting upon crossed legs with hands placed so as to direct the viewer's eyes toward his protruding chest. Given the vessel's profile silhouette as well as the subject's clearly delineated spinal vertebrae, the person represented here was most likely a hunchback. Physical deformities like this were regarded as signs that such individuals were actually chosen and touched by god. Indeed their handicaps were embraced and interpreted as special qualities rather than unfortunate handicaps. Size: 6" x 6.5" W x 8.75" H (15.2 cm x 16.5 cm x 22.2 cm)
