**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A unique mold-formed blackware pottery jug presenting a round base, a spherical body, a long neck, and a bulbous spout featuring the head of a bird with target-shaped eyes and a pointed beak. The avian animal looks down upon a relief of fish aligned in a horizontal band under swirling waves of water that decorates the shoulder of this ancient vessel. A slender strip of clay protrudes from the back of the bird's head and ends on the jug's shoulder, forming a lovely ribbon-like handle. A gorgeous example of blackware from Chimu culture! Provenance: ex-James Byrnes collection, Los Angeles, California before 1980. James was the first curator for LACMA in the 1950's

- Condition: Repaired from several pieces with break lines still visible in areas and minor piece missing from base. Chip to rim and another to beak. Expected surface wear with nicks, abrasions, and light scratches commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with lovely earthen deposits in recessed areas.
