Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A fantastic blackware vessel in the form of a wide-bodied insect - perhaps a grasshopper or cricket by form - with the segmented carapace and wings forming the upper part and sides of the body and the spindly legs depicted in relief on the lower part of the vessel. A narrow stirrup handle with a tall, thin, cylindrical spout rises from the center of the back. Size: 9.8" W x 8.7" H (24.9 cm x 22.1 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
