Pre-Columbian, central to northern Peru, Chimu/Inca, ca. 1300 to 1500 CE. Attractive blackware pottery canteen with 8 added bird adornments. Six of the small birds face downward with the upper two facing toward the flaring spout. This appears to be the work of a Chimu artisan under the control of the Inca. Around 1470 the Chimu were defeated by Inca emperor Topa Inca Yupanqui who retained Chimu potters who created masterpieces in blackware such as this vessel. Size: 7.75" W x 7.75" H (19.7 cm x 19.7 cm)
