Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, northern Chile, Mapuche people, ca. 1500 CE. A handsome pipe carved from a single piece of dark volcanic stone, with a smooth surface. The chamber is in the center of the pipe, with a thin, raised rim. This style - the T-shape with the chamber in the center - was popular among ritual pipe smoking in the ancient Andes. Pipes like this one also seem to have been favored gifts given between different cultural groups throughout ancient Chile, and styles made in different regions have been found far from their origins. Size: 3.15" W x 1.45" H (8 cm x 3.7 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Bettina Schwimmer collection, Chicago, Illinois, USA, collected from 1955-2006
