Description:

Native American, Southeastern United States, Cherokee, ca. mid-20th century CE. A wooden warrior dance mask adorned with brass rivets, wire, and copper eye panels, featuring a rattlesnake perched atop the head. The mask is painted yellow with black and red war paint streaks around the eyes, while the snake displays its distinctive diamond pattern. The venomous rattlesnake, symbolizing fearlessness, was closely associated with warriors. Traditionally, warrior masks were worn both in preparation for battle and during mid-winter dances to commemorate past victories and to purify the way for spring. Size: 12.25" L x 7" W (31.1 cm x 17.8 cm)
