Pre-Columbian, northern Peru, Chavin, ca. 1100 to 600 BCE. A very fine stone mortar from one of the earliest and most artistically advanced cultures of South America. The gray volcanic stone vessel presents with a flat base, a short lip, and tall walls incised with decorations of two abstract birds bearing large eyes and distinct feathered tails. Birds were treasured by the ancients of the Americas for their brilliant plumage as well as their ability to fly as sky animals who communed with the deities. Added red pigment accentuates an already wonderful piece! Size: 6.5" W x 3.9" H (16.5 cm x 9.9 cm)

  • Condition: Neatly repaired from 2 pieces, with light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor chips to rim and base, with light fading to red pigment within incised details. Great preservation to incised details across exterior. Old inventory label beneath base.
