Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Chavin-Cayalti, Templadera, ca. 700 to 400 BCE. A fascinating polychrome vessel in the form of a charming bird with a long, squat body, two tiny projecting wings, a tapering tail, and a small head with two deeply drilled eye holes. Incised lines form fascinating patterns on the piece, including swirls surrounding the head and deep grooves on the upper body, while black, white, and red pigment creates a vibrant surface. A wide, flaring mouth is at the top and center of the body. The Chavin period at Cayalti featured a series of elite tombs, and this vessel is likely from one of them, made to hold a ritual offering. Size: 5.95" L x 4.7" W x 3.4" H (15.1 cm x 11.9 cm x 8.6 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex Splendors of the World collection; ex H. J. Westermann Coll., Germany 1950's to 1960's
