Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Chavin, Tembladera-Jequetepeque River, ca. 1200 to 500 BCE. A hand-built pottery stirrup vessel depicting an abstract anthropomorphic shaman leaning over as if deep in a trace. The stylized figure is incised with dozens of curvilinear striations that create diamond around the verso as well as a wavy pattern on the vest, and the arms themselvesv protrude out from the side walls. Red pigment is applied to some striations to aid them in standing out against the black pottery hue. Size: 7" L x 6" W x 11.25" H (17.8 cm x 15.2 cm x 28.6 cm)

  • Condition: Professionally repaired with restoration, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and minor fading to pigment, with age-commensurate pitting in scattered areas, and softening to some incised decorations, otherwise in great condition. Nice preservation to shamanic style. Previous inventory label beneath base.
