Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Chavin, Tembladera-Jequetepeque River, ca. 1200 to 500 BCE. A hand-built pottery stirrup vessel depicting an abstract anthropomorphic shaman leaning over as if deep in a trance. The stylized figure is incised with dozens of curvilinear striations that create diamond around the verso as well as a wavy pattern on the vest, and the arms themselves protrude out from the side walls. Red pigment is applied to some striations to aid them in standing out against the black pottery hue. Size: 7" L x 6" W x 11.25" H (17.8 cm x 15.2 cm x 28.6 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010
