Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chavin, ca. 1200 to 500 BCE. A striking cup, hand carved from a black stone with white veining, rendered with stylized details. The vessel sits upon a flat base, and thick walls rise upwards to a rounded rim. The abstracted incised pattern around the exterior walls are zoomorphic in form with swirling, serpentine patterns. Nice remains of red cinnabar remain in the recesses of the incised designs creating a lovely contrast with the black burnished surfaces. Size: 3.25" W x 3.25" H (8.3 cm x 8.3 cm)
