Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chavin culture, ca. 900 to 200 BCE. This is a gorgeous blackware stirrup vessel with incised red geometric designs swirling around the body and the handle. The Chavin culture is known as "the mother civilization of the Andes" and is compared to the Olmec in Mexico in terms of artistic inspiration for later periods. A stirrup spout vessel like this one would have been mold-made and then detailed by hand. It seems likely that a vessel like this one would have held chicha, fermented corn beer. Size: 9 1/2" H x 5" W. Provenance: Ex-Splendors of the World Gallery All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #110362
