Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chavin, Moche ca. 400 BCE - 400 BCE. This Chavin bird pendant is finely carved from sodalite - note the intricate detailing of those wings! Sky animals like birds were associated with the celestial sun, moon, and Venus by the ancients of the Americas. Birds were believed to act as messengers between humans and their deities. Most of the celestial deities had winged alters. In fact, all were birds with the exception of the butterfly. If that symbolism doesn't strike a chord with you, surely the artisan of the piece will! 3-1/2 cm long
