Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Chavin, 900 to 200 BCE. Simple yet elegant, this stunning necklace is composed of 29 barrel-shaped quartz crystal beads arranged in a graduated design and centered on one particularly large bead. All beads are biconically drilled - their translucent quality makes it possible to see the drill marks - strung in modern times with a modern gold-plated clasp. Rock crystal finds from the Chavin period are fascinating. Some researchers believe that rock crystal beads just like these show that the Chavin had developed the ability to shape convex lenses, perhaps for magnification or fire starting. Size: 19" L (48.3 cm); largest bead (centermost) measures .875" L (2.2 cm)

Provenance: private Probst collection, Monterey, California, USA, acquired in the mid-1970s to mid-1990s
