Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chavin, ca. 1200 to 500 BCE. A hand-built and highly burnished brownware pottery vessel with a slightly rounded but stable base, a tall, apple-shaped body with a curved shoulder, and a gently corseted neck with a flared rim. Three tall panels of incised horizontal bands present themselves around the body, each separated by a single vertical column, and with petite stippling impressions filling each slender band. Size: 5" Diameter x 8" H (12.7 cm x 20.3 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, before 2010; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, acquired in the 1950s to 1960s

  • Condition: Professionally repaired with restoration, with nearly invisible resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Minor abrasions to exterior surfaces, with possible re-tooling to some incised decorations, and light earthen deposits within body. Nice preservation to most incised decorations.
