Description:

Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Chavin culture, ca. 900 to 200 BCE. A gorgeous, understated ceramic vessel, burnished to a deep brown ocher color, with a lightly incised, repeated motif around the apple-shaped body, its surface highly polished, of a rectangle with four tall, thin triangles jutting off each of its four sides. Above the apple-shaped body, the neck tapers in a long, cylindrical form, to a thick, rolled, rim around a narrow mouth. The symmetry and geometry of the form is fantastic. Size: 4.7" W x 7.25" H (11.9 cm x 18.4 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s, with Sotheby's Arcade sticker
