Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chavin, ca. 1000 to 400 BCE. A hand-built pottery figure standing upon delineated legs, wearing a simple waist band and loincloth, and holding stocky arms on either side of a perforated navel. An integral, multi-strand necklace is draped atop the chest, and elaborate earrings flank either side of the tall head. Impressed ovoid eyes, a prominent nose, thin lips, and puffy eye lids compose the stylized countenance, and a diamond-shaped hat tops the head. The highly burnished surfaces are covered in orange and red-orange slip that make this an attractive figural example from ancient Peru! Size: 2.4" W x 5.75" H (6.1 cm x 14.6 cm); 7.25" H (18.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany
