Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 400 BCE. A broad textile panel of rectangular form created by weaving cotton threads in hues of brown and cream. The intriguing design on the textile features an abstract deity with a fanged mouth, large eyes, and deep cheek wrinkles while another creature, perhaps smaller, is in the lower corner. Size (textile): 24.875" L x 12.6" W (63.2 cm x 32 cm); (backing): 29.4" L x 17.5" W (74.7 cm x 44.4 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Kemper collection, Switzerland, from the 1940s - 1980s, then donated to The Museum of Islamic Art, Jerusalem, Israel, in the 1970s
