Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chavin/Moche, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. An elegant necklace comprised of hand-cut, hand-shaped, and hand-polished quartz crystal and turquoise beads arranged in an attractive, symmetrical design. There are 9 quartz crystal beads - 6 lozenge shaped and 3 rounded. Interspersed with these are 8 turquoise beads of stunning mottled aqua and seafoam hues - with 36 more turquoise beads completing the design around the neck, making for a total of 44 turquoise beads. Strung in modern times with a modern .925 silver clasp. Size: 19" L (48.3 cm); largest quartz bead (centermost pendant bead) is 1" in diameter (2.5 cm)

Provenance: private Probst collection, Monterey, California, USA, acquired in the mid-1970s to mid-1990s

  • Condition: Quartz beads show a few internal pressure fissures and normal scuffs and nicks commensurate with age. Turquoise beads show minute nicks here and there and expected age wear. All beads are ancient. Strung in modern times with modern stringing and .925 silver clasp.
