Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chavin, Jequetepeque valley, ca. 700 to 400 BCE. A delightful ceramic stirrup vessel in the form of a deer, perhaps one that has been fattened for a ritual feast. It has a pleasingly rounded body with its legs and hoofed feet depicted in relief on one side of its lower body. Its head is elegantly twisted as if looking behind itself; the head gives the impression of being a juvenile animal, with massive eyes and ears and a serene expression on its sweet face. Incised circular markings, with the thin incisions filled with red cinnabar pigment, mark the animal's pelt; the neck and face are almost entirely covered in the same red color aside from the eyes. The stirrup handle rises from the animal's back, terminating in a tall spout. Size: 7.85" W x 9.55" H (19.9 cm x 24.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from the 1950s to the 1960s
