Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chavin culture, ca. 1200 to 500 BCE. A hand-built and highly burnished brownware pottery vessel decorated with incised striations. The vessel features a planar base, an apple-shaped body with a rounded shoulder, and a gently tapered spout with a thick, flared rim. The chocolate brown surfaces of the body bear 3 columns of incised wavy columns with pairs of fins or leaf-like projections, all filled with petite incised circles, and a ring of dashes encircles the base of the spout. Size: 4.4" Diameter x 7" H (11.2 cm x 17.8 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, before 2010; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, acquired in the 1950s to 1960s

  • Condition: Repair and restoration to small area of rim, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Minor abrasions and fading to brown pigment commensurate with age, with light earthen deposits within some incised decorations, and a couple of small spalls, otherwise in excellent condition. Nice preservation to incised decorations. Old inventory label beneath base.
