Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, ca. 1200-500 BCE. Blackware pottery vessel with depictions of wide-eyed owl heads and stylized jaguar heads from this early Pre-Columbian culture. These two nocturnal animals were replete with rich symbolism in the ancient Americas. The jaguar, king of the beasts, was revered for its speed and massive strength. In addition the spots on its coat related it to the starry night sky. Owls were also associated with the celestial realm and thought to be messengers used by underworld lords. Measures 8" in diameter x 2"H. Provenance: Ex-Westermann Collection, Germany, acquired in 1950s.
