Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chavin, ca. 900 to 200 BCE. A fierce, hand-carved greenstone pendant in the form of a springing jaguar, its forelegs curled downward, its back legs straight out, as if mid-leap. The head strains forward, with bulging eyes and a wide, leering mouth full of teeth. A thick loop on the back allowed this to be worn decoratively. The feline is the most pervasive animal in ancient Peruvian art, associated with military, religious, and political leaders. The jaguar, which in life hunts by jumping at the head of its prey, may have been a symbol of decapitation - another recurring theme in ancient Peru. Size: 2.5" W x 3.05" H (6.4 cm x 7.7 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
